Birch trees are like figures to me. They dance in the wind, they twist, turn, look at each other or away (minding their own business). My aim to capture movement and character and make the shapes readable (dark and mid-dark over midtones).
Wearing Braids was about my “being brave” and painting dark shapes DARK. I scrubbed out an old painting, let it dry, made marks to indicate the subject, then painted with watercolor and gouache. Lines of tree branches are barely visible.
